Character Illustration: Van Gogh

This artwork was developed as an assignment defined by Playcracy, with the aim of exploring different illustration styles and identifying which visual direction would be most suitable for future projects.

The creative process began with a close study of Van Gogh’s facial proportions, captured through hand-drawn sketches to understand the balance of his features. Building on these studies, I explored two distinct digital approaches: one inspired by printmaking aesthetics, with bold contrasts and detailed textures, and another more cartoonish, emphasizing expressive exaggeration and humor. The printmaking-inspired style required more intricate design and digitalization, while the cartoonish version offered a playful, accessible interpretation. Together, these approaches highlight both the intensity and approachability of Van Gogh’s persona, demonstrating how different visual languages can bring historical figures to life.
